One in 6 Americans Have Pre-Diabetes, But With Changes, These People May Be Able to Halt Diabetes in Its Tracks

Did you know that a whopping one in 6 Americans have pre-diabetes but don’t know it?

To put it another way, 54 million Americans are going about their daily lives unaware of the many dangers they could be facing.

So points out Medical News Today.

I’ve called your attention to this alarming pre-diabetic condition, but given that it’s American Diabetes Month, I’m doing so again.

Like many experts nationwide, Mark Schutta, M.D., medical director of the Penn Rodebaugh Diabetes Center, urges at-risk patients to take action. If you’re at risk, then be proactive. Ask your doctor for a simple blood test for pre-diabetes.

The idea, Dr. Schutta says, is to arm yourself with information before the damage is done. You see, pre-diabetes means you have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal. It also means that you could one day be diagnosed with having diabetes.

"If you have pre-diabetes, there’s a 75% probability that you will develop diabetes within 30 years," warns Dr. Schutta.

"Our country is in the middle of a type 2 diabetes epidemic. Right now, if you’re born in the U.S., your risk of developing diabetes is one in three."

Please, those of you who are obese, overweight, inactive and big sugar consumers, see a doctor. Find out if you have pre-diabetes. If you learn you have pre-diabetes today and you start making drastic lifestyle changes, you may be able to halt diabetes in its tracks — and regain your health and energy to boot.
