Combining Food Additives Could Harm Nervous System, Study Says

If a child consumes foods that combine common food additives, doing so could interfere with the development of the nervous system, according to a new report, Food Navigator/Europe reported.

This is scary news, especially given that many kids down processed foods galore containing multiple additives.

Indeed, the findings raise major some concerns about the health implications that result from kids eating low-quality, additive-filled foods.

Researchers at the Univerity of Liverpool — whose report was published in the journal Toxicological Sciences — looked at what happened when the food coloring brilliant blue (E133) was combined with monosodium glutamate (MSG; E621) and the coloring quinoline yellow (E951) was combined with the sweetener aspartame (E951).

According to the results, "when these additives were combined in levels similar to those consumed in a typical children’s snack and drink, they stunted the growth of nerve cells in mice, interfering with proper signalling functions," Food Navigator explained.

The three-year study was funded by Organix Brands, manufacturers of a range of organic foods for children.

Granted the organic food manufacturer hoped for a certain result, but this sounds like a pretty legitimate study to me.

I’d certainly recommend to parents to take heed of this news and to listen follow the company’s sugestion.

“Babies and children are especially vulnerable to harm from toxic chemicals since they are at a crucial stage of development,” Organix said, suggesting that “processed food and confectionery are probably the main two food types that should be avoided by children where possible.”

  1. HI Connie!
Thank you so much for this post! I met with a client today to organize her kitchen and I successfully got her to dump 50 packs of Koolaid! I’m working on getting her to give the kids only water to drink as she has a child with ADD. Of course, she has to do it herself as well. People have such a hard time kicking this stuff and your blog is an inspiration. I joined your Sugarshock program and plan to quit sugar with your help.
I posted about you in my blog at neatliving.net and added you to my list of Resource Blogs. I hope you will check out my blog and add me to your list.
I’m planning a series on Organizing for Health that I think your readers will enjoy. I plan to address how to organize your life and home to make it easier to eat right, exercise and reduce stress. After I quit sugar, I’ll post about that too. Any “organizing your kitchen” tips you would like to contribute will be most welcome!
    Keep up the great work!!!
    Ariane
