MRI May Lead to Early Detection in Pre-Diabetics

People at risk for diabetes or heart disease may soon be diagnosed earlier than ever, thanks to a recent development that uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to take still images of the heart.

Scientists already knew that fat builds up in the hearts of type 2 diabetics and people with heart failure, however they didn’t know when it developed, we learned from HealthDay News.

Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
used MRI and additional computer software to examine the hearts of
study subjects and found that fat had already begun to accumulate in
the hearts of pre-diabetics before they developed symptoms.

The team, led by associate professor and hypertension researcher Lidia S. Szczepaniak, Ph.D. , published its findings in the journal Circulation.
