When I felt so much better simply by cutting out sweets and crappy carbs, I became driven to discover why. My fascination led to my first book, Sugar Shock: How Sweets and Simple Carbs Can Derail Your Life–And How You Can Get Back on Track (Berkley Books). It quickly became a bestseller and was endorsed by a who’s who of health experts. (At the time, not many books about sugar had been released.)
After more than a decade of eating cleanly, I blew my diet often, stuffed my face with mounds of greasy movie popcorn and other fattening, ultra-processed carbs (but not sugar). Small surprise: I quickly gained 21 pounds. I felt utterly ashamed, because I’m a health expert who knows better!
