Sleep-Deprived? Eat Fewer Carbs!

Note from Connie: Up until now, it’s been mostly anecdotal that if you eat a lot of chips, crackers and cookies, you have a hard time sleeping. Read on to learn about a fascinating study that links consuming too many carbs with getting less sleep. Jennifer Moore brings you the details.

People who slept 5.5 hours, compared to a group of people who slept 8.5 hours a night, ate more snacks and higher-carb snacks, according to research presented at SLEEP 2008, the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS).

So does this mean that if you sleep longer, you’re less likely to nosh on junky processed foods? Interesting findings. Either way, this small study is another reason we should all make sure to steer clear of refined carbs so we can get a good night’s sleep!

Medical News Today provided the tip to this research via an adapted version of the press release provided by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, one of sponsors of the SLEEP conference.
