Sandwich-Board Stunt at Book-Expo America Drew Many Accolades but Also Disdain

While my good-natured, fun-loving sandwich-board publicity stunt at Book Expo America (see photos here) drew lots of laughter and chuckles over the weekend, it has since drawn the disdain of one publishing insider.

Did you think my sandwich board gimmick at BEA was creative or funny?

Or do you agree with this perspective and then these follow-up insights from Lynn Price, editorial director of Behler Publications?

Please also read my reply to her post, which is at her blog. (By the way, I did not add the darn smiley face — it's supposed to be a # 8!)

Should I be more timid in getting the word out about my next book, The Weight-Loss Habits of Highly Successful Losers or should I continue to try to build a buzz in whatever creative manner I deem fit?

What do you think?

  1. I saw you and your sandwich board at BEA. I thought it was a very clever self-marketing stunt. It’s not something that a lot of people could pull off, but you seemed to be having fun with it.
And I believe that it will lead to something good for you. I mean, seriously, publishers need authors who get creative and promote their books.
Here’s my post from BEA: http://wordspicturesweb.com/?p=314

  2. As the original sandwich board stunt guy (did it for a job in 1996, got 479 calls, 79 interviews, and 37 offers, I say “good on ya!” Damn right you should do it. The haters simply don’t have the guts you do.

  3. I thought it was a very humorous, creative and brilliant marketing move — especially because we are in a era that is less uppity and more real. Being proactive and promotional is a key part of what makes an author and his/her book stand out and be successful in the sea of books that are being written right now. This PR move will lead to great new possibilities for you!
