New research from Italy shows that the artificial sweetener aspartame can be carcinogenic.
Indeed, scientists showed for the first time in experimental conditions that aspartame "causes a dose-related statistically significant increase in lymphomas [malignant tumors that arise in the lymph nodes] and leukaemias [chronic neoplastic diseases of the bone marrow] in female rats at dose levels very near those to which humans can be exposed."
The startling new study — which was published in the Cancer Research Centre for the European Ramazzini Foundation of Oncology and Environmental Sciences in Bologna, Italy — also reveals a connection between low exposure of aspartame and a 62% increase in lymphomas and leukaemias compared to controls, even though this was not statistically significant."
I’m no scientist, but I’m baffled as to why 62% — which seems like quite a lot — isn’t deemed "statistically significant."
There’s more bad news, too. The Italian researchers also noticed an increase in neoplasias (abnormal tissue growth or tumors) among males exposed to the highest aspartame dose, even though it wasn’t stastically significant.
The scientists speculate that the increase in lymphomas and leukaemias "could be related to methanol, a metabolite of APM, which is metabolised to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, both in humans and rats."
I do hope that those of you out there who consume aspartame-laden drinks and other products will take this to heart. This is certainly scary information, don’t you think?

Note from Connie: I was forced to drastically shorten this comment, because it went on 11.048 words — longer than a bunch of my entries combined!!! Here’s an excerpt from the comment:
“Dark wines and liquors, as well as aspartame, provide similar levels of
methanol, above 100 mg daily, for long-term heavy users. Methanol is
inevitably largely turned into formaldehyde, and thence largely into formic acid.”
…Fully 11% of aspartame is methanol — 1,120 mg aspartame in 2 L diet soda, almost six 12-oz cans, gives 123 mg methanol (wood alcohol) — the same amount that produces hangover from red wine.
…The symptom list is similar to reports by aspartame reactors.
If only a fraction of aspartame users happen to be vulnerable to the
methanol, that would account well for the disbelief by those who are not
aspartame reactors, as well as the scientific difficulty in proving
aspartame toxicity in the general population.
Thanks, Connie– Rich

This is very, very scary for me! I used to drink coffee. In fact, I loved it, but when I had my teeth bonded I could no longer drink it because coffee would instantly stain my beautiful new teeth. Since I despise mornings, I had to switch to soda, which I actually really never liked that much. At the time of my switch I was working the 6 am shift at a diner. Aaaargh! They let us drink all the soda we wanted. I chose the Diet Coke. After a month, I started getting lumps in my breasts. This terrified me. I didn’t make the connection and thought I might have breast cancer. Very scary when you don’t have health insurance. Anyway, I finally got a mammogram after the third lump showed up. BTW, the lumps got bigger right before my period, then subsided a little. Lumps were benign and determined to be cysts. Treatment was lay off the caffeine, take vitamin E and wait.
Despite this advice there were times in the past two years where I really felt I needed caffeine in order to survive my am jobs. For example, four months ago I took a job and was honestly drinking a ridiculous amount of Diet Mountain Dew. I’m talking 10 oz or more per day, 3-4 days a week for two months. Well guess what? That’s right! -lump city. Except this time the lumps cropped up in my armpits. Sometimes as many as four lumps at a time would be present. These lumps were clearly visible to the eye, raised as much as 1/4 of an inch from the rest of the skin. They seemed to alternate armpits, with several in one pit that lasted about a week, and then would subside. Then they would start up on the other pit.
Well, needless to say, I quit drinking Diet Soda FOREVER this time. It has been two months since I quit and I am STILL getting lumps although with less frequency, size, and pain. There is NO DOUBT in my mind that this was caused by aspartame because it only happened during times when I was using Diet Soda. It never happened when I was a coffee drinker.
Also, I would like to get pregnant in about a year, so I am detoxing my body starting now. I have eliminated Aspartame, MSG, High Fructose Corn Syrup, and Sodium Nitrate from my diet and try to get my husband to do the same. Because I am still getting the lumps, I am thinking of doing a detox fast or something. Does anyone know of a good, safe, and natural way to detox the lymph nodes, blood stream, or other organs that may have been affected by my reckless drug use?
Thanks for listening-Maria
