Happy birthday to the impressive organization, Nourish Our Kids, which educates parents and their children on ways to maintain a more natural, healthy diet and lifestyle.
The group — which turns two years old this month — focuses on a balanced lifestye that stresses whole foods (unprocessed and minimally processed) and natural remedies, whenever possible.
Read the fascinating story about Nourish Our Kids founder and CEO Donna Terjesen, whose journey from sickness to health seems to parallel mine in a number of ways. The health advocate, activist, wife and mother of two has been involved in a number of what I dub "Ray-of-Hope Programs." She:
- Conducted quarterly health forums at local Borders’ Book Stores throughout New York City for over two years;
- Was invited by New York City Hall to support "No Junk" legislation that supported getting rid of junk food sales to children through vending machines during school hours. Currently, all elementary schools in New York City have eliminated the sale of soda, candy and gum;
- Was asked to participate as one of four experts on a panel abbout current health issues that affect New York City’s children at the 2004 Annual Children’s Aid Society’s Symposium;
- Was featured for her work with the Go! Kids program in the 2004 documentary, “Obesity – A National Crisis” that aired on Manhattan Neighborhood Network’s “City Talk” as well as in “Keeping Kids Healthy” that aired on PBS in May 2005; and
- Serves as curriculum director for the Children’s Aid Society’s Go! Kids program and is responsible for revising the children’s and parent curricula; hiring and training health
- educators; etc. etc. growth, which today, supports approximately 225 children and parents at three head start schools in lower Manhattan and the Bronx.

Kudos to Donna Terjesen and her colleagues for doing important work to reach kids and their parents.
