Now this is one wild, sad, over-the-top incident that illustrates the power of the need for a "sugar fix."
You see, doughnuts and Danishes drove a 20-year-old Reserve man to smash the window of a convenience store in New Orleans late Monday night. Whoah! Now that’s sugar addiction in action, wouldn’t you say?
The Sugar Burglar — Bryan Perrilloux, who’s now being held at Sherman Walker Correctional Facility (rather than a $15,000 bond) — admitted to police that he he was just trying to score some pastries when he broke into Danny and Clyde’s convenience store.
Sure sounds like he was possessed by a powerful, irrational, horribly misguided force!
In fact, Maj. Mike Tregre, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said they found the convenience store’s glass shattered and blood on the floor.
Hmmm. Was Perrilloux in the midst of a low blood sugar episode that he just had to have a sugar buzz right then and there?
You know, it’s embarrassing to admit, but way back when (before I quit sugar on April 15, 1998), when I wanted red licorice or hard candies, there were times that I fantasized about smashing a window or two. But, of course, I never stooped that low.
But I have to tell you that I sure suffered from some withdrawal symptoms when I quit the stuff. Trust me, the many benefits I received from kicking sure outweighed my short misery when I had headaches, mood swings, and concentration problems.
Sure enough, it wasn’t all in my head. In fact, while working on my upcoming book, SUGAR SHOCK! (Berkley Books, Dec. 26, 2006), I learned that scientists have been actually discovering that people can, in fact, get dependent on sugar. They’ve also discovered that the same parts of the brain are even involved activated as if you had a drug addiction.
