Do You Drink Enough Water? It Can Help With Midnight Hunger

I have water on my mind. It’s all because I was cleaning out old e-mails from my overflowing Outlook inbox. Lo and behold, I saw an old e-mail from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I’m now going to school, and they sent the following facts about water.

So interesting are they that I’m passing them onto you.

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

(Likely applies to half of the world population.)

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

Please note: I’m really big into always giving credit where it’s due so these facts are taken verbatim from the old e-mail from IIN.

In turn, IIN got this information from Public Citizen‘s document, the Water Privatization Overview,

which delves into the wordwide crisis over water.

FYI, Public Citizen is a national, non-profit, public interest organization. You can learn about the group’s ongoing campaign here — Water for All: Campaigning to Keep Water as a Public Trust.

Oh, wait, one more interesting link. While just in Washington, D.C. for a conference, I met Jack Barber, the president of WaterWise, which offers what sound like wonderful products, which allegedly get rid of 99.9 percent of impurities in H2O. In fact, they have a catchy slogan — they claim to offer Water As Pure As Nature Intended.

After hearing Jack speak and telling us how their systems work, I’m convinced. So, I’m going to buy it myself. Here’s how to reach them.

  1. This is so true.. I noticed when training for the nationals, just by drinking more water, it helped me not only feel more energetic (hydration is important in cooling sufficiently and increasing transport rate) but also it allowed me to lose fat. This is simply down to the ‘mistaking for hunger’ scenario. Thanks for the extra tips — I’m sure they are just what people need to see in order to increase national/international helth tenfold!
But if you are an athelete, make sure you maintain electrolytes too, [but] with too much water, the conc. of electrolytes and other organic compounds can lead to undesirable problems!
