This comes as no news to me, but breakfasts cereals for Australians contain alarming amounts of both sugar and salt, according to new tests.
Indeed, The Sunday Mail in Australia reported that food experts learned that five popular cereals contain more than 30 per cent sugar. But that’s not all they discovered. Some cereals were saltier than a packet of potato chips.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Apparently, the Australians are facing woes similar to ours in America.
Sure enough, cereals that may appear to be nutritious are laced with sugar and salt, notes Australian Consumers’ Association (ACA) food policy officer Clare Hughes.
The ACA examined 150 brands of cereal and found that just 40 of those would make a healthy everyday breakfast. (‘Course, I’m wondering if those 40 are actually nutritioous.)
"It was quite disappointing to see that a lot of cereals targeted at children weren’t the type of the things we should be giving kids every day," Hughes said.
