Oxymoron: “Healthy” Junk Foods

I welcome scrutiny of cookies, cereals and chips from major food companies, but, seriously, how can these products be deemed anything but unadulterated junk food?

They sure don’t have the nutrient value of wholesome foods that grow on trees.

But check out this entertaining story from endocrinologist Renu Mansukhani, M.D., which has the oxymoronic title, "The New `Healthy’ Junk Foods."

Bonnie Liebman of the food industry watchdog group the Center for Science in the Public Interest has the right idea.

She’s quoted in the story as saying: “Chips are chips, and they shouldn’t take the place of fresh fruits and vegetables” as healthy snacks – even if they happen to carry a green “Smart Spot.”
