Raw zucchini and whole-grain pasta are being introduced into Fairfax County public high schools.
In addition, Little Debbie snack cakes and Lorna Doone cookies have been banished from vending machines.
While the news isn’t entirely good — Fairfax schools still offer students Wheat Thins, pretzels, low-fat brownies, baked Doritos, ice cream sandwiches and banana cream ice cream treats — in the long run, the nutritional improvements are heartening in a nation that serves all too much junk food in the schools.
