I was on vacation last Sunday and therefore I wasn’t around to see or comment on this New York Times article, "A Sweetener With a Bad Rap," about high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
For now, though, this article about HFCS appears to be very well researched, and I am a big fan of reporter Melanie Warner. In fact, I’ve greatly admired her work in the past.
While it’s very clear that Melanie raises some very, very good points, I’m inclined to think that I have some issues with this story’s conclusions.
After I’ve had a chance to review this more thoroughly and to go back and look at some HFCS studies, I’ll make more informed comments.
For now, I can safely say that I can cite other studies which Melanie doesn’t mention, which suggest an altogether different conclusion — that we should, in fact, be wary about HFCS. I’ll write more later when I have some time.
Right now, I have deadlines to address a copyeditor’s many queries on my manuscript for SUGAR SHOCK!
