Dietitians at an Illinois high school say that bottled water now outsells soda in its school vending machines, according to the Automatic Merchandising magazine‘s online edition.
Don’t you love it?
Bottled water accounted for 48% of beverage sales at Evanston Township High School, and soda and sports drinks combined brought in 39%, and 100% fruit juices accounted for 13%.
How did water outsell soda?
Well, the theory is that one simple move may have made the difference.
You see, water and juice were placed in the top slots of the vending machines, while soda and sports drinks were relegated to the bottom.
While this story is about just one high school, this proves kids can be steered to healthier, less sugary drink choices.
Let’s hope other school districts across the country will relegate their bottled water to better spots in vending machines and get the same kind of results, too.
