Sugar Addiction Could Lead to Macular Degeneration

As my book SUGAR SHOCK! reveals, eating too many sweets and refined carbs leads to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and many other illnesses.
But did you know that a diet high in sugary foods can also make you blind?
Yes, high-sugar diets can significantly contribute to vision impairment. In particular, you can get Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which is now the # 1 cause for vision loss in the United States.
The following is a post that was contributed by LensShopper.com.
Sugar Addiction Could Trigger Macular Degeneration by Anders Wedin, OD.
Research shows that excessive sugar consumption is a contributing factor to AMD. At Tufts University, 4,000 people between 55 and 80 years old were studied to test the alleged connection. The results strongly indicated that high blood sugar levels increased the risk of AMD.

Lakers’ Lamar Odom: Is His Candy Habit Triggering His Uneven Performance on the Basketball Court?

Why does the Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom have an uneven performance on the basketball court such as this flagrant foul?
In a blog post, entitled “The Lakers’ Lamar Odom, Sweet Tooth and Erratic Play,” Dr. Daniel Amen, a Lakers fan since a child, presents a compelling theory — the basketball player’s compulsive candy habit is to blame.
After interviewing hundreds of experts for my book SUGAR SHOCK! and suffering my own horrific, sugar-induced nightmare, the physician’s concept makes perfect sense.
Dr. Amen, author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life and Magnificent Mind at Any Age, writes that Odom “is unbelievably talented, but often acts like a space cadet during games.
“He can play great, and be worth his 14 million-dollar salary, or he can act like he is `missing in action.'”
Indeed, acting like a space cadet or have brain fog is clearly a manifestation of low blood sugar, which can be triggered by eating too many sweets.
Kudos to Dr. Amen for pointing out that “Odom’s massive consumption of candy leads to a sugar high and then a crash, evidence of which can be seen on the basketball court.”

Agave: Is It a Safe Sweetener Alternative? I Recommend Skipping It

Agave nectar has become quite controversial of late. Lately, many people — especially folks who are concerned about their health — have been eagerly consuming it, but I believe they’re doing so without knowing the full facts.
After repeated questions from people about whether or not they can safely consume agave, I posted on this Sugar Shock Blog, most recently here and before that, here.
My conclusion? Briefly, I’m really wary of this sweetener, which is really high in fructose. I have too many questions about agave.
To put it bluntly, I won’t ever consume agave since I know about the dangers of fructose, which I learned more about last weekend from Dr. Richard Johnson at a Food Addiction Summit in Washington state.
Richard (I got to know him while hiking there) is the author of the fascinating book, The Sugar Fix: The High Fructose Fallout That Is Making You Fat and Sick.

High Fructose Corn Syrup: Some Scary Facts to Consider Before You Gulp Down Soda

Did you know that consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in the United States has increased by a a whopping 10,673 percent between 1970 and 2005? So reports the USDA Dietary Assessment of Major Trends in U.S. Food Consumption report.
Are you one of millions, who, according to the USDA report, consume one-quarter of your calories from added sugars, most of which comes from high fructose corn syrup?
And have you heard about the a recent study, which reveals that a diet high in high fructose corn syrup may be partly to blame for insulin resistance?

Agave: People Are Getting Duped Into Consuming this High-Fructose Sweetener

110px-Agave_attenuata_Pot_2250px This is getting downright tiring!
People, especially health-conscious folks, are often getting duped by agave. They’re being led to believe that it’s a safe sweetener.
Please, people, do NOT consume this sweetener until you read the following warning that I posted back in December 2008.

Sugar Shocker! What is Dangerous Mercury Doing in High Fructose Corn Syrup?

As if high fructose corn syrup isn’t bad enough, (especially because it’s so ubiquitous in our food supply), now high levels of the toxic metal mercury has been found to lurk in the sweetener — and potentially for many years.
Yikes! That’s scary!
Mind-boggling new research found that nearly one-third of the HFCS-containing grocery products (tested for a study) were contaminated with detectable levels of mercury.
Let me translate this so you just so you don’t miss the significance of this finding.
If you swig a a soda sweetened with HFCS, you’re also tossing down some dangerous mercury.
Whenever you grab candy bars, you’re likely getting high fructose corn syrup and therefore mercury.
Ditto with many breads, crackers, salad dressings, frozen and fast foods, tomato sauces and fruit drinks.
