Hurrah to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California for having the guts to sign into law bills to ban the most fattening, sugary foods from the state’s schools despite the opposition of groups such as the California Chamber of Commerce and the Grocery Manufacturers of America.
The fit governor called these measures "the most progressive school nutrition reforms in the nation."
The legislation will ban soda sales in high schools and will set sugar, fat and calorie standards for all foods sold in schools outside cafeteria lunches.
He’s also intending to sign a bill that calls for spending $18.5 million over the next year to buy more fresh fruits and vegetables for breaksfasts and snacks in public schools.
How wonderful to bring more veggies and fruits into the schools!
Schwarzenegger signed the legislation at the start of a daylong summit on health and obesity in the California capital Sacramento, Reuters reported.
Good for the governor, whose conference brought out a number of companies such as Kraft Foods Inc., Safeway Inc. and McDonald’s Corp., which announced plans to offer more healthy food choices, according to a press release from the governor’s office.
