You Need Carbs to Lose Weight

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, that headline might be surprising. After all, there has been no shortage of entries on this blog railing against the havoc that processed carbs can cause in your body.

But not all carbs are created equal. As Connie often points out in her book SUGAR SHOCK!, you need carbohydrates — as long as they’re the high-quality ones.

Indeed, renowned physician Dr. Mark Hyman, author of UltraMetabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss contends eating the right kinds of carbs are vital to help you lose weight. What’s more, Dr. Hyman says, low-carb diets actually backfire ultimately, causing a person to re-gain lost weight — and then some.

So what are the right carbs, and how do they help you stay trim, healthy, and full of energy?

Lesson number two of Dr. Hyman’s online course "How to Reset Your Metabolism to Lose the Weight and Keep it Off for Life" has some answers.

For starters, the right carbs — vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains — are packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are needed to properly run your metabolism. These quality carbs also provide you with vital antioxidants, and Dr. Hyman posits that a shortage of those vital nutrients can cause you to pack on pounds.

"Here a simple rule:  if you are eating carbs that came directly from nature, then they are okay," Dr. Hyman writes.

"But if the carbs you are eating have been processed in any way, they are likely to make you
gain weight.  So stay away from those," he advises.

Sounds promising!
