Institute for Integrative Nutrition: Discover the Joy

Posted on

Often, I’m asked where I went to school to study health and wellness.
As a grad of the student of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), it’s my pleasure to spread the word about this amazing school, which has a fabulous mission.
The school seeks to play a crucial role in improving health and happiness, and through that process, create a ripple effect that transforms the world.
Because of getting so many questions about IIN from would-be students, I even created a post here on the Sugar Shock Blog to answer them.
But yesterday, I was honored to be joined by IIN staffer Sharon Stevens, who was kind Sharon Stevens210 enough to answer your questions about this school.
She appeared in one of the final programs of Sweeter Holiday Summit, which featured 35+ experts in health, wellness, personal empowerment, the Law of Attraction, abundance and more. (It was an awesome program — I urge you to check it out and take advantage of the Super Sale.)
* Anyhow, Sharon kindly answered a bunch of questions about the school to help those of you who may be interested in attending. For instance, she told you:
* What is a health coach?
* Who are some the leading instructors at the school? (Hint: Big names in health and wellness.)
* Where Health Coaches work.
* How attending the school can be a life-changing experience.
* What you can expect to learn at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
* About some graduates of the school, who’ve gone on to make major contributions.
* How the program is delivered.
* How you can take advantage of a special offer if you enroll this week. (You’ll receive a special Self Care gift bag.)
* How you can find out more about the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Email admissions@integrativenutrition.com or call now with questions or to enroll:

Healthy Vending Machines on the Rise

Posted on

Note from Connie: Today, the Sugar Shock Blog presents a guest post from fellow writer/health coach/IIN grad Suzanne Boothby about new vending machines that healthier foods than you usually find. Full Disclosure: Suzanne is a spokesperson for HUMAN Healthy Vending, the company about which she is writing. In this instance, HUMAN stands for Helping Unite Man and Nutrition.

By Suzanne Boothby
There’s been a lot of buzz recently about school nutrition and, in particular, the problem with junk-filled vending machines in schools.
“Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years,” writes Dr. Oz Garcia in The Huffington Post. “Statistics show that nearly one in three American children are either overweight or obese.”
Dr. Garcia points out that while parents play the most important role in teaching children healthy habits, the U.S. school system plays a very central part in developing a child’s eating habits.
Another article on BusinessWeek, “School Vending Machines Undermine Student Nutrition,” referenced a report from the Journal of Adolescent Health, showing the negative impact vending machine foods had on the purchasing choices of students at about 150 different U.S. schools.
More than 80% of the schools studied carried vending machines offering foods with minimal nutritional value, including chips, soda and candy bars.
Enter Sean Kelly and Andy Mackensen, co-founders of HUMAN Healthy Vending machines, which offer healthier fare in the 30-billion vending machine industry.
HUMAN Healthy Vending Machines offer foods that cater to various dietary needs, including those that look for foods that are 100% organic, no-sugar-added, gluten-free, allergen-free, low-fat and carb.
Some of the vending machine’s bestselling snacks include PopChips!, TERRA Chips, Larabars, and BARE FRUIT snacks. Drinks include Fiji water, Poland Spring water, Perrier, Horizon Organic Milk and Vita Coco water.
The new digitally interactive, eco-friendly Healthy Vending machines have some unique features. They display all ingredients via LCD before you purchase it. What this means is that you can select a product from a touch screen keypad, and then before you make your purchase, the machine shows you the nutritional info on that same touch-screen. Therefore, you don’t have to lose change by buying snacks that don’t work for your particular diet.
In addition to providing healthier choices, HUMAN Healthy Vending machines include an eco-component with remote monitoring systems to ensure eco-friendly refilling. Plus, they contain LED lighting and energy-efficient refrigeration units to save power. In addition, the company donates 10% of proceeds to charitable causes that fight childhood obesity and malnutrition.
You can find these HUMAN Healthy Vending machines in schools, offices, hotels and hospitals, as well as health clubs, gyms and spas. In New York City, you can find these machines at the Aveda New York Institute, Mt. Sinai Medical Center and in the new offshoot of Equinox, Blink.
Suzanne Boothby is currently a spokesperson for HUMAN Healthy Vending, as wells as a Brooklyn-based wellness author and writing coach who dabbles in social media and marketing. She is a proud graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and The Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
Note from Connie: What a welcome development! These machines do seem to contain something for everyone. Please note, however, that while these snacks are far healthier than what you find in traditional vending machines, not all of these foods are healthy by everyone’s standards. So just follow your doctor’s guidelines and eat what works for you. By the way, I’m thrilled with the feature that you can save yourself time and money by being able to check out the ingredients first via LCD screen. What a unique, cutting-edge feature!

Recipe: IIN Winner Frank Giglio’s Seared Scallops with Cucumber Salad

Posted on

The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the wonderful school I attended in 2005-2006, recently held a “What’s on Your Plate?” contest.
Here’s the yummy recipe winner from chef Frank Giglio. Thanks, IIN and Frank, for sharing this with us!
Seared Scallops with Cucumber Salad
Serves 2
Ingredients:
2 Tablespoons coconut oil
4-8 Large scallops (U-10)
A sprinkle of Frank’s Finest Lemon-Pepper Blend
1 large English cucumber
2 Tablespoons thinly sliced red onion
1 cup snap peas, cut into 3rds
1/4 cup fresh dill, roughly chopped
2-3 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
1-2 Tablespoons olive oil
Sea salt to taste
Freshly cracked black peppercorns
1/2 lemon for drizzling
1 green onion, tops sliced thin
Directions:
With a Japanese mandolin or sharp knife, thinly slice the cucumber. Place into a large bowl, mix in the snap peas, onions, and dill. Drizzle in the olive oil and vinegar, then season with sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Toss well and allow flavors to meld.
Place the scallops on a dish and season with Lemon-Pepper blend
Heat a large heavy bottom skillet over medium-high heat. Melt the coconut oil and when a light amount of smoke is visual, add the scallops. Cook on one side until well browned, then flip each scallop, turn off the heat and allow to rest in the pan for 1-2 minutes before removing.
Place a small amount of cucumber salad onto 2 plates. Place 4 scallops around each salad. Drizzle the plate with lemon juice and sliced green onions. Serve and enjoy!
Frank Giglio is the owner of Frank’s Finest. He is also the Executive Chef and Contributing Editor to The Best Day Ever. Learn more about Frank at www.FrankGiglio.com.
If you have an interest in nutrition, I highly recommend that you contact the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Learn more information at www.IntegrativeNutrition.com. Or you can call IIN with questions. From the US, use this number: (877) 730-5444, and International callers can use this number +1 (212) 257-6171. You can also set up an appointment to talk to an admissions advisor. Please make sure to say that Connie Bennett referred you. (I’m a big believer in being “as transparent as an ocean breeze,” as marketer Alex Mandossian calls it, so let me reveal that, yes, if you sign up, I would get a referral fee. However, the only reason I’m recommending the school is because the training you get from IIN is an amazing, one-of-a-kind experience. So I encourage you to contact IIN now.
