ABC’s to Break Free of Your Sugar Addiction & Other Bad Habits

If you’re like most people, you’re often tempted by good-looking, mouth-watering, nutrient-poor “treats” such as dazzling donuts, colorful cereals or sugary soda.
As if that wasn’t enough, many of you succumb to other enticements. For instance, you may skimp on sleep; excessively drink coffee, alcohol or soda; think negatively; smoke cigarettes; procrastinate; and obsessively text or send emails.
As I mentioned on my companion YouTube video, it’s certainly understandable if you feel the urge to overindulge or engage in counter-productive pursuits. Wherever you go and wherever you live, you’re relentlessly bombarded and seduced by unhealthy foods, substances and activities.
But I invite you to look inside and decide: Do you feel trapped by your sugar habit, late bedtimes or another bad habit (what I call a babit™)? And are you plagued by baffling health issues such as annoying weight gain, ferocious headaches or even type two diabetes? (As you’ll soon learn, there’s a connection between your bad habits and those health issues.)
You may feel weak and low on self control when it comes to your horrible habits. But I’m here to reassure you. You can escape from the prison of a bad habit. In fact, I respectfully challenge you now: Get out from under your bad habits (babits™) so that you can have a life that rocks!
Of course, you may wonder “What’s In It For You” (WIFY) if you overcome your sugar addiction and other bad habits. As millions can attest, you will benefit in many ways.
For instance, when you give up unhealthy tendencies such as overdoing it on sugar, not getting enough sleep or consuming too much coffee, you can expect to get more energy, concentrate better, lose weight, become more productive and have better relationships.
What’s more, as many of my clients have delightedly shared with me, if you just cut out sugar and refined carbs, you even may be able to boost your libido. Likewise, once you get enough zzz’s, you may have more energy and interest in bedroom action with your honey.
Now, let me share my ABC’s to Break Free of Your Sugar Addiction, Sleep Skimping and Other Bad Habits (Babits™). See my companion YouTube video in which I share some of these tips.
Here’s the complete rundown:
A is for Assume & Accept.
Just assume and accept that just about wherever you go, you’ll be tempted, no matter what your bad habit.
For instance, your favorite aunt will nudge you to eat her favorite chocolate cake. You have to pass that vending machine at work. Inevitably, you’ll be taunted by candies galore while purchasing sundries at the local drug store.
In addition, your computer, television set or video games may “call out” to you late at night so you end up sitting in front of them instead of getting at least seven hours of sleep.
But if you assume that you’ll inevitably be teased by unhealthy “treats,” you can prepare by always having healthy, delicious snacks on hand to munch instead — such as edamame (soy nuts), pumpkin seeds, hard-boiled eggs and sugar-free crackers or an apple (preferably organic) with sugar-free almond butter.
And if you assume that late every night, you’ll be tempted to catch up on emails, watch your favorite TV shows via DVR or try to beat your previous record on your favorite video games, you can start to turn off your appliances earlier every night (say 6, 7 or 8 pm) so that you’ll get into bed at a reasonable time.

Client Kicks Candy on Good Friday: Will You Join Her?

I just had a touching, powerful coaching session with a new private client, whose Christian religion is important to her and whose sugar habit puts her “in the deepest funk” and “controls” her.
After some discussion about today being a somber occasion since it’s Good Friday, she decided that “Good Friday is the death of my bad [sugar] habit.”
Specifically, she plans to kick red licorice and other candies for Lent, while it is still happening.
“Jesus made a big sacrifice for me,” she told me. “If I’m able to kick the habit, what an honor it would be. He would be so happy.”
I just thought I’d share this with those of you who are religious and into sweets.
Would you, too, like help to kick your sugar addiction? If so, learn about my Break Free of Your Sugar Addiction Program.
FYI, if you become a new private or group coaching client through the month of April, you also will receive free admission to my upcoming Break of Your Sugar Addiction Program, which begins April 20. (So you’re getting a gift that is valued at $147 through April 5. On April 6, the price is $177.)
It would be my honor to help you. To work with me either privately or in groups, contact me to set up your complimentary strategy session.
I have every confidence in you that you can Break Free of Your Sugar Addiction. And, if you do, your life can improve in many ways, from weight loss to happier moods.

Megan Confronts Cake in a Letter

Often, when I’m coaching clients to kick their sugar addiction, I’m hit by moments of intuition as to what may help people. (In coaching school with iPEC, they taught us to honor, respect and look for those flashes.)
So last Wednesday, during one of my Break-Free Group Coaching sessions, the idea hit me out of the blue that members might be helped if they wrote a letter or poem to their favorite sweets.
I then asked members what they thought of the idea of doing this. (I never give assignments.)
On Friday, Megan Bozman, one of our members, ran with the idea and wrote a brilliant, insightful, poignant letter while tempted by a cake at work.
She then confided to us (the group members and me): “B-day cake, vanilla with white icing is one of my #1 fav sweets — and that happens to be EXACTLY what is in our conference room right now, about 5 feet from my desk. So I figure it’s a good time to write that letter to my fav sweet (which, as of Wed night, I was already planning on making white b-day cake!)”
White-cake Here’s how Meg confronted Cake — a letter I’m republishing with her permission:
“Dear Cake,
“It’s not you; it’s me. I am aware this is cliched, but it is the truth in this case. You are not an evil entity.
“While you are a nutritional wasteland, you are not evil in moderation. I still plan to welcome you into my home to celebrate my son’s birthdays and other such occasions.
“Again, it’s not you; it’s me. Something in me doesn’t react well to you & I realize this. You are fantastic during the too-brief time I get to enjoy you. Ecstatic & wonderful.
“But too often, before I even finish swallowing the last bite, I just want more! Then, I still want more and more and more. That is where the evil comes into play… it is in large quantities that you become evil.
“And I won’t waste time elaborating on why large quantities of you are bad. That doesn’t bear repeating.
“When I get ensnared by your addictive properties, I feel terrible; both physically & emotionally. The feeling of being hooked is dreadful. For one thing, it’s just simply embarrassing! It also has a negative effect on my self-esteem (really, I can’t `just say no’ & only eat a moderate amount?! What is wrong with me?)
“I don’t have some of the negative effects some experience such as stomach pains, yeast infections, skin problems, & blood sugar crashes causing a rapid decline in both energy & mood. However, I feel bloated, fat, and, well, gross. Feeling fat & gross makes me feel ugly. It’s just bad; just all around bad.
“So there you sit in the conference room. I’m sure others will enjoy you — don’t fret. Cake rarely goes uneaten in any office. But for now, I’m 10 days sweets-free & intend to go another 11 days for a round 3 weeks. At that point, I’m thinking I’ll stick to a serving of dessert or sweets once every 3 weeks.
Ta ta,
Meg”
Megan then told us that she shared her Letter to Cake with her husband, who came back with a hilarious response. He wrote:
