Sugar and Sex Hormones: Excess Amounts of the Sweet Stuff Linked to Infertility, Cancer, and More

New research in the Journal of Clinical Investigation reveals another reason to avoid using heaps of sugar: Too much of the sweetener can shut off a gene that helps control estrogen and testosterone levels.

What could happen if there’s too much estrogen and testosterone floating around your body?

Excess sex hormones are associated with infertility, polycystic ovaries, acne, and uterine cancer in overweight women, according to this press release from the Child and Family Research Institute, the organization at which lead researcher Geoffrey Hammond, Ph.D. and his team are based.

Imbalances in sex hormones are also tied to heart disease, particularly in women, the research team found.
